925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver, alloyed with other metals for strength. Like all real silver, it reacts with air and moisture over time and can slowly darken. That is normal, and it is easy to manage with a few simple habits.
Why silver darkens
Silver reacts with sulphur in the air, and the process speeds up with humidity, sweat, perfume, lotions, hair spray and chlorine. Pieces left out in a humid bathroom will darken faster than pieces stored in a closed pouch.
Everyday habits
- Put jewellery on last. Apply perfume, lotion and make-up first and let them dry.
- Take it off first. Remove pieces before bathing, swimming, workouts and cleaning.
- Wipe after wearing. A quick wipe with a soft, dry cloth removes skin oils before storing.
- Wear it often. Regular, gentle wear actually helps keep silver bright.
Storing your pieces
Store each piece in its VERSORI pouch or a small zip bag, away from humidity. Keeping pieces separate also stops chains tangling and stones scratching other pieces.
Cleaning darkened silver
- Wipe gently with a soft silver polishing cloth.
- For more build-up, wash in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, using a soft brush.
- Rinse and dry completely with a soft cloth before storing.
Avoid toothpaste, baking soda and harsh dips, which can scratch the surface or damage stones and pearls.
Rose gold plated pieces
Our rose gold pieces are 925 sterling silver with rose gold plating. Clean these with a soft dry cloth only, and avoid polishing cloths and rubbing, which can wear the plating over time.
Pearls and stones
Pearls are delicate. Keep them away from water, perfume and chemicals, and wipe with a soft dry cloth after wear.
